Sherry Depth Without Noise
Bunnahabhain 18 has long stood as one of the most composed mature expressions from Islay. Where many island malts lean into smoke and maritime drama, this one moves differently. It is largely unpeated in character, sherry-led, and quietly confident. Age is not used as decoration here. It is integrated, measured, and fully absorbed into the whisky’s structure.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers who appreciate mature sherry influence without aggressive oak. For those who value depth over peat and patience over power. It rewards slow attention.
Overall Character
Rich, layered, and dry-leaning rather than sweet. Dark fruit, polished oak, and coastal nuance sit in balance. The texture carries weight, but never heaviness.
Production Style
Unpeated malt. Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, predominantly Oloroso. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 46.3% ABV.
Nose
Deep and composed. Dried figs, raisins, and dark cherries lead, followed by roasted nuts and leather-bound books. There is a faint saline thread beneath the sherry richness, keeping the nose from becoming dense. Old oak, polished and calm, rounds it out.
Palate
Full-bodied but controlled. Dark chocolate, stewed plum, toasted walnut, and dry spice unfold gradually. The sherry influence is assertive yet disciplined. It avoids syrupy sweetness and instead leans toward structure. Mid-palate brings gentle espresso bitterness and a subtle coastal salt note.
Finish
Long and warming. Dry cocoa, oak tannin, and lingering dried fruit persist. The fade is steady, slightly austere, and satisfying without excess sweetness.
Strengths
Excellent integration of age and sherry influence
Textural weight without heaviness
Long, structured finish
Bottled at a strength that preserves depth
Limitations
It prioritises composure over excitement, and I sometimes wish it would take one more risk.
Value & Use Case
Positioned at the higher end of the core range, it delivers maturity and complexity that justify the step up. Best suited to slow evening drinking, ideally without distraction. It does not demand attention. It assumes you will give it.

Final Verdict
Bunnahabhain 18 is a reminder that Islay is not defined by smoke alone. It offers age, sherry character, and coastal restraint in a well-judged frame. Quietly complex and confidently mature, it earns its place among the stronger 18-year-old expressions in regular production. Not dramatic. Just assured.
