American Single Malt with a Bourbon Accent
Stranahan’s Original was one of the early voices arguing that American single malt deserved its own seat at the table. Distilled in Denver and matured in new American oak, it does not whisper its intentions. This is malt dressed in fresh oak, confident and distinctly American.
Who Is This For?
For bourbon drinkers curious about malt. For single malt fans who are not afraid of new oak. And for anyone who prefers flavour delivered with clarity rather than mystery.
Overall Character
Full, sweet, and oak-driven. The malt is present, but it stands inside a framework of vanilla, caramel, and toasted wood. This is structure first, nuance second.
Production Style
Made from 100% malted barley and matured exclusively in new American oak barrels. Bottled at 47% ABV.
Nose
Immediate vanilla and caramel rise from the glass. Baked apple, cinnamon, and honeyed cereal follow. There is warmth here, almost dessert-like, but balanced by a firm backbone of toasted oak.
Palate
Rich and rounded. Brown sugar, malt syrup, and vanilla cream dominate early, followed by charred oak and baking spice. The texture is generous. The oak does not hide; it plants a flag. At times it leans heavily into sweetness, but it carries enough weight to justify it.
Finish
Medium to long. Drying oak spice, caramelised sugar, and a faint cocoa bitterness linger. The wood remains present to the last sip, firm but not harsh.
Strengths
Clear and confident identity
Solid body and texture at 47% ABV
Bridges bourbon and malt drinkers effectively
Limitations
I sometimes wish the malt were allowed to speak a little louder than the oak.
Value & Use Case
Best enjoyed neat or with a drop of water to soften the oak edges. It also stands up well in spirit-forward cocktails. This is not a quiet fireside contemplative malt. It is more of a front-porch statement piece.

Final Verdict
Stranahan’s Original does not attempt to mimic Scotland, and that is its strength. It leans into new American oak with conviction. Some will find it bold and satisfying; others may find it slightly over-insistent. Either way, it has personality. And personality, in a young category, matters.
