Barley First, Oak Close Behind
Lochlea Our Barley is the flagship release from a young Lowland distillery that has wasted little time establishing a clear identity. Produced entirely from barley grown on the distillery’s own farm and matured in a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts, and STR barriques, it is bottled at 46% without an age statement. It is youthful, certainly. But it is not unsure.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers who are curious about modern farm-to-cask whisky and who appreciate structure, grain clarity, and oak influence that is visible rather than concealed.
Overall Character
Focused and cereal-forward, with sweetness kept in check by assertive oak framing. It feels deliberate and contemporary, shaped more by design than by time.
Production Style
Single malt produced exclusively from estate-grown barley. Matured in a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts, and STR barriques. Bottled at 46% ABV.
Nose
Fresh malt and digestive biscuit open the glass. Green apple, underripe pear, and lemon zest bring brightness, while vanilla and light toffee round the edges. A firm note of oak spice reminds you that this is carefully engineered youth rather than accidental maturity.
Palate
Medium-bodied with immediate barley sweetness. Honey, baked apple, and light caramel build through the centre. The STR casks introduce red fruit hints and a dry, slightly grippy tannin. The wood is confident, bordering on dominant, yet the spirit remains clean and well-defined beneath it.
Finish
Moderate in length. Dry oak spice, toasted grain, and faint cocoa bitterness linger. The sweetness recedes early, leaving structure and spice to carry the close.
Strengths
Clear expression of malted barley
Structured and purposeful cask integration
Solid texture and delivery at 46%
Limitations
The oak influence can feel slightly ahead of the spirit’s natural weight.
I occasionally wish the fruit carried further before the tannins take control.
Value & Use Case
This is a whisky for engaged tasting rather than background sipping. It works well in flights of young distilleries and rewards a few drops of water. It is also a statement of intent from a producer that clearly knows what it wants to build.

Final Verdict
Lochlea Our Barley is a whisky that puts its agricultural credentials front and centre. It does not hide behind sweetness or polish. Instead, it presents barley with clarity and lets active wood provide the architecture. The balance is not perfect, but it is confident. For a young core expression, that confidence matters.
