Small Casks, Big Coastal Personality
Some whiskies rely on long aging to build character. Oban Little Bay takes a different route: smaller casks, faster interaction with oak, and a goal of capturing Oban’s coastal style in a slightly younger, more energetic form.
The name comes from a tiny bay just outside the harbour town where the distillery sits. Fittingly, the whisky feels a little like the place itself, compact, lively, and shaped by the sea.
It doesn’t try to replace the classic 14-year-old. Instead, it shows what Oban tastes like when the distillery turns up the oak and lets the maritime character run a bit wilder.
Who Is This For?
Drinkers who enjoy coastal whisky with gentle smoke and maritime notes but want a slightly more lively and youthful profile than traditional aged expressions.
Overall Character
Medium-bodied coastal Highland malt combining citrus, honey sweetness, light peat smoke, and pronounced maritime salinity with slightly more oak influence.
Production Style
Oban Little Bay is matured initially in refill American oak casks before a portion of the whisky undergoes additional maturation in smaller oak casks to increase wood interaction. The whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.
Nose
Bright and coastal. Orange peel, apple, and honey lead the aroma. Sea salt and soft smoke follow underneath. Vanilla and caramel appear from the oak, alongside a faint herbal freshness.
Palate
Medium body with a smooth texture. Sweet malt and citrus arrive first, followed by honey and baked apple. Mid-palate introduces sea salt, light peat smoke, and mild pepper spice. The smaller cask influence adds noticeable oak spice and structure. The 43% ABV keeps the whisky approachable while maintaining balance.
Finish
Moderate length. Lingering citrus peel, gentle smoke, and oak spice remain. A faint saline note continues into the finish, reinforcing the coastal character.
Strengths
Clear coastal character.
Good balance of fruit, smoke, and oak.
Slightly more energetic than the 14-year-old.
Limitations
Oak influence can feel slightly assertive.
Complexity remains moderate.
It feels like Oban 14’s younger sibling, slightly louder, slightly less polished, but still very recognisably family.
Value & Use Case
A versatile coastal dram for drinkers who enjoy Oban’s style but want something a little more lively and oak-forward.

Final Verdict

A compact coastal dram with plenty of character.
