When Arran Stops Being Polite

Arran’s regular whiskies are usually bright, fruity, and well behaved. The kind of island malt that shows up in a crisp shirt and speaks in complete sentences.

Then someone handed it a first-fill sherry cask and removed the dilution.

The Bodega Cask is Arran with the volume turned up. Matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso casks and bottled at natural strength, it takes the distillery’s clean spirit and loads it with dark fruit, chocolate, spice, and enough intensity to remind you that subtlety is not the goal today.

This isn’t Arran being delicate.

This is Arran bringing the entire sherry warehouse with it.

Who Is This For?

Drinkers who enjoy powerful sherried whisky and higher-strength bottlings. Especially appealing to enthusiasts who like controlling dilution themselves.

Overall Character

Full-bodied island malt packed with dark dried fruit, chocolate, spice, and intense sherry richness.

Production Style

Arran produces an unpeated island spirit using traditional copper pot stills. The Bodega Sherry Cask expression is matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration.

Nose

Big and immediately sherried. Raisins, fig, and dark cherry lead the aroma, followed by treacle, cocoa, and burnt orange peel. Cinnamon and clove add warmth while roasted almond and polished oak sit underneath. A faint hint of espresso emerges as the whisky opens. Even before tasting it, the whisky makes it clear this will not be subtle.

Palate

Full-bodied with a thick, oily texture. Dark fruit and treacle arrive first, followed by bitter chocolate and caramelised sugar. Mid-palate introduces orange marmalade, roasted walnuts, and dense baking spice. Hints of espresso and toasted oak appear as the whisky develops. The high ABV brings real heat and power, but the flavours remain cohesive rather than chaotic.

Finish

Long and warming. Cocoa, dried fruit, and oak spice linger for a long time. A slight dryness appears late, tightening the finish and preventing the sweetness from becoming overwhelming.

Strengths

Massive sherry character.

Excellent texture and intensity.

High ABV allows flexible dilution.

Limitations

Power can overshadow nuance.

Some drinkers may find the alcohol aggressive without water.

This is not a quiet dram. It’s the whisky equivalent of turning the speakers up and discovering the music still sounds good.

Value & Use Case

A rewarding bottle for experienced drinkers who enjoy exploring whisky at full strength. Best approached slowly, with optional water to reveal additional layers.

Similar Whiskies

Aberlour A’bunadh. Similar sherry intensity. Advantage: Often slightly richer PX influence. Disadvantage: Less distillery clarity.

Tamdhu Cask Strength. Similar Oloroso focus. Advantage: Cleaner sherry profile. Disadvantage: Slightly lighter body.

GlenDronach Cask Strength. Similar sherry power. Advantage: Greater depth. Disadvantage: Less youthful energy.

Final Verdict

Arran Sherry Cask The Bodega takes the distillery’s clean island spirit and pushes it through first-fill Oloroso casks at full strength. The result is bold, rich, and unapologetically sherried.

A whisky that clearly believes moderation is overrated.
