Small Casks, Big Personality

Arran’s standard whiskies tend to be bright, fruity, and well behaved. The kind of island malt that politely introduces itself before getting interesting.

The Bothy skips that introduction entirely.

By finishing the whisky in smaller quarter casks, the distillery dramatically increases the amount of wood interaction. More oak, more spice, more texture. And because it’s bottled at natural cask strength, none of that energy gets watered down on the way to the bottle.

The result feels like Arran with its sleeves rolled up.

Who Is This For?

Drinkers who enjoy cask-strength whisky with bold oak influence and strong texture. Ideal for enthusiasts who like powerful but balanced malts.

Overall Character

Full-bodied island malt combining citrus, vanilla sweetness, toasted oak spice, and powerful structure.

Production Style

Arran produces an unpeated island spirit using traditional copper pot stills. The whisky matures initially in ex-bourbon casks before finishing in smaller American oak quarter casks to increase wood contact. It is bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration.

Nose

Energetic and bright. Lemon zest and green apple appear first, followed by vanilla and honey. Toasted oak and coconut emerge quickly, along with light caramel and a faint almond note.

Palate

Full body with a thick, slightly oily texture. Sweet malt and vanilla arrive first, followed by citrus peel and honey. Mid-palate introduces toasted coconut, caramel, and firm oak spice. The high ABV provides real power and warmth while the smaller casks amplify the oak influence.

Finish

Long and warming. Vanilla, oak spice, and citrus linger while the sweetness gradually fades. A dry, spicy edge appears late.

Strengths

Powerful texture and structure.

Bright fruit balanced by strong oak influence.

High ABV allows flexible dilution.

Limitations

Oak influence can feel assertive.

Alcohol strength benefits from a little water.

It’s the whisky equivalent of turning the oak dial from “background” to “front row.”

Value & Use Case

A rewarding dram for enthusiasts who enjoy exploring whisky at cask strength. Particularly enjoyable when diluted slightly to reveal additional layers.

Similar Whiskies

Deanston Virgin Oak – Similar oak-driven style. Advantage: Fuller wood influence. Disadvantage: Less fruit brightness.

Glenmorangie Astar – Similar American oak focus. Advantage: Greater vanilla intensity. Disadvantage: Less raw power.

Aberlour A’bunadh – Similar cask strength intensity. Advantage: Richer sherry character. Disadvantage: Less citrus freshness.

Final Verdict

Arran The Bothy Quarter Cask takes the distillery’s bright island spirit and supercharges it with oak and cask strength. The result is bold, energetic, and packed with flavour.

A small cask with a surprisingly big voice.
