When a Light Spirit Gets Dressed for Dinner
Auchentoshan’s spirit is famously delicate. Triple distillation strips away heaviness and leaves something bright, clean, and almost polite. On its own, that can sometimes feel a little… restrained.
The Three Wood clearly had a different plan.
Take that light Lowland spirit and march it through three different cask types, bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and finally Pedro Ximénez. Suddenly the whisky shows up wearing dark fruit, chocolate, and a surprising amount of sweetness. It’s still recognisably Auchentoshan underneath, but the casks have clearly taken charge of the conversation.
And honestly, that’s probably for the best.
Who Is This For?
Drinkers who enjoy rich, sweet whisky with heavy sherry influence but prefer a slightly softer structure than many Highland sherry bombs.
Overall Character
Medium-bodied Lowland malt dominated by dark dried fruit, chocolate sweetness, and sherry richness.
Production Style
Auchentoshan produces a light spirit through triple distillation. The Three Wood expression matures first in American oak ex-bourbon casks, followed by Oloroso sherry casks and finally Pedro Ximénez casks before bottling at 43% ABV.
Nose
Rich and sweet. Raisins, dark sugar, and dried apricot appear immediately. Chocolate and caramel follow, along with orange peel and vanilla. The sherry influence dominates the aroma, though a faint citrus brightness hints at the underlying spirit.
Palate
Medium-bodied with a smooth texture. Dark fruit and caramel arrive first, followed by chocolate and molasses sweetness. Mid-palate introduces orange marmalade, roasted nuts, and soft spice. The 43% ABV keeps the whisky balanced, though the sweetness remains firmly in control.
Finish
Moderate to long. Dried fruit and chocolate linger, followed by gentle oak spice and mild dryness that gradually reins in the sweetness.
Strengths
Rich sherry-driven flavour profile.
Pleasant balance between chocolate, fruit, and spice.
More depth than many Lowland whiskies.
Limitations
Cask influence dominates the spirit.
Sweetness can feel slightly heavy.
The whisky sometimes feels like the casks did most of the talking.
Value & Use Case
A good after-dinner dram for drinkers who enjoy sweet, sherry-forward whisky without extreme intensity.

Final Verdict
Auchentoshan Three Wood shows what happens when a very light Lowland spirit receives a full sherry treatment. The result is rich, sweet, and enjoyable, even if the casks occasionally steal the spotlight.
Sometimes letting the wood take control is the right decision.
