Fruit, Oak, and a Whisper of Smoke
Benriach has always been a slightly unusual Speyside distillery. While most of its neighbours focus on clean fruit and sherry sweetness, Benriach has never been afraid to add a little smoke, a little experimentation, and a little personality.
The Original Ten is essentially the distillery introducing itself. Bourbon casks for brightness, sherry casks for sweetness, and a touch of lightly peated spirit to keep things interesting. On paper that sounds busy. In the glass, it mostly works.
The whisky doesn’t try to dominate with any single flavour. Instead, it spreads its bets across fruit, vanilla, malt, and just a hint of smoke.
Who Is This For?
Drinkers who enjoy Speyside whisky but want a little more variety than the usual fruit-and-honey formula. Also a good choice for those curious about lightly smoky whisky without committing to peat.
Overall Character
Medium-bodied Speyside malt combining orchard fruit, vanilla sweetness, light oak spice, and a subtle background smoke.
Production Style
Benriach produces both peated and unpeated spirit. The Original Ten combines whiskies matured in bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and virgin oak casks. A portion of lightly peated Benriach spirit is included in the final vatting before bottling at 43% ABV.
Nose
Fresh and fruity. Apple, pear, and peach lead the aroma. Honey and vanilla follow, alongside soft caramel and a touch of toasted oak. A faint wisp of smoke appears underneath but remains subtle.
Palate
Medium body with a smooth texture. Orchard fruit and honeyed malt arrive first, followed by vanilla and caramel. Mid-palate introduces light oak spice and toasted nuts. The gentle peat appears quietly in the background, adding a mild earthy edge without dominating.
Finish
Moderate length. Fading fruit sweetness and soft oak spice linger, with a faint smoky note appearing late.
Strengths
Balanced fruit and oak character.
Light peat adds subtle complexity.
Approachable yet slightly distinctive for Speyside.
Limitations
Peat influence is very subtle.
Complexity remains moderate rather than deeply layered.
It’s the kind of whisky that tries to please everyone, and mostly succeeds.
Value & Use Case
A versatile everyday Speyside dram. Particularly good for drinkers who want a hint of smoke without stepping into heavily peated territory.
