The Kid Who Already Runs the Classroom
Most whisky distilleries spend decades quietly finding their voice. Chichibu arrived sounding confident from the start.
Founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, the distillery entered the whisky world like the student who walks into class late and somehow still gets the highest exam score. Early releases were scarce, experimental, and chased by collectors with near-obsessive enthusiasm.
But “The First Ten” marks a different moment. This is where the prodigy begins to look like a fully formed distillery.
A ten-year-old whisky from a distillery that barely existed fifteen years ago should feel premature. Instead, it feels composed.
Who Is This For?
Drinkers who appreciate precision, balance, and layered fruit character. Enthusiasts curious about modern Japanese whisky that prioritises structure over spectacle.
Complex, fruit-driven whisky combining orchard fruit, citrus, honey sweetness, and layered oak spice with subtle incense-like wood influence.
Production Style
Chichibu is a small-scale distillery using traditional copper pot stills and carefully controlled maturation. “The First Ten” is matured in a mix of bourbon barrels, sherry casks, mizunara oak, and wine casks. Bottled at 50.5% ABV without chill filtration, the whisky retains texture and aromatic intensity.
Nose
Immediately expressive. Ripe peach, apple, and orange peel leap from the glass. Honey and vanilla follow, with dried apricot and a hint of raisin beneath. Mizunara oak contributes gentle sandalwood and spice. A faint herbal freshness sits alongside soft malt sweetness. It smells confident rather than showy.
Palate
Medium to full body with a silky, lightly oily texture. Orchard fruit and honey arrive first, followed by caramel and citrus oils. Mid-palate reveals dried fruit, soft baking spice, and toasted oak. Mizunara adds subtle incense and sandalwood notes. The 50.5% ABV is beautifully integrated, delivering energy and structure without harshness. It evolves steadily and deliberately, like it planned the whole thing.
Finish
Long and controlled. Oak spice, citrus peel, and dried fruit linger. A faint woody incense note appears late, supported by vanilla and gentle warmth. The flavours fade gradually rather than collapsing.
Strengths
Impressive integration of multiple cask types.
Excellent texture and structure.
Precise balance between fruit and oak.
Limitations
Mizunara influence remains understated.
Complexity unfolds gradually rather than dramatically.
The only real criticism is philosophical: it’s almost annoyingly competent.
Value & Use Case
A whisky for slow sipping and focused tasting. Best appreciated with time in the glass. Not built for casual pours, but for drinkers who enjoy analysing why something works.

Final Verdict
Chichibu The First Ten proves that the distillery’s reputation wasn’t hype, it was early evidence. The whisky delivers maturity, balance, and layered complexity with impressive confidence for such a young distillery.
Ten years old, and already acting like it owns the room.
