Quiet Power from the North
Highland Park 25 is a whisky that has stopped trying to impress anyone. After twenty five years in wood, it no longer needs to. This is maturity expressed as calm authority. It speaks in a lower register, and if you lean in, it has quite a lot to say.
Though produced on Orkney, it sits officially within the Highland region. The island character remains unmistakable, but the presentation is measured, not theatrical.
Who Is This For?
For experienced drinkers who prefer integration over impact. For those who enjoy discovering layers slowly rather than being confronted by them all at once. It rewards patience and a decent glass.
Overall Character
Deep, structured, and harmonised. Dried fruit, dark sweetness, polished oak, and gently smouldering peat move in steady formation. It feels complete, not flashy.
Production Style
Lightly peated malt, traditional copper pot still distillation, matured in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks.
Nose
Immediately composed. Sultanas, dried fig, and orange peel open the glass, supported by honeycomb and dark caramel. Heather smoke sits in the background, woven into the fruit rather than floating above it. The oak is mature and polished, offering depth without sharpness. It smells like confidence.
Palate
Full and assured. Stewed plums, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and molasses unfold in layers. The peat shows itself as a gentle earthiness, never as smoke for effect. European oak contributes spice and structure, American oak brings sweetness and roundness. The texture is supple but firm, like well-worn leather.
Finish
Long and deliberate. Cocoa, clove, and fading smoke linger alongside dried citrus and a subtle saline edge that quietly nods to its Orkney home. It does not rush off the stage. It takes a final bow.
Strengths
Exceptional integration of fruit, oak, and restrained peat
Rich texture without heaviness
Long, structured finish that sustains complexity
Limitations
I sometimes wish the oak would ease back just slightly in the final moments.
Value & Use Case
This is not an everyday pour, unless your everyday is unusually fortunate. It belongs in a quiet setting, with time to follow its development. It performs best when treated seriously, though it never feels self-important.
Similar Whiskies
Macallan 25 Sherry Oak – Comparable maturity and polished sherry depth
GlenDronach 25 – Rich European oak influence with dense dried fruit character
Talisker 25 – Coastal complexity and similar age-driven composure, though with more overt maritime character
Final Verdict
Highland Park 25 is what happens when peat, sherry oak, and time reach a truce. Nothing dominates. Nothing shouts. It simply works. The island origin is present, but civilised. The wood is assertive, but disciplined. It is not trying to be exciting. It is trying to be complete, and largely succeeds.
