Layers Beneath the Smoke

Most Laphroaig expressions announce themselves with medicinal force. Lore does something slightly different. It still carries the iodine and Atlantic brine the distillery is known for, but there is an added depth, a darker, older undertone that shifts the experience from sharp to layered.

Positioned as a richly composed, multi-cask expression, Lore aims to show complexity rather than raw intensity. It keeps the coastal DNA intact while adding weight from varied oak influence. The result is not a reinvention of Laphroaig. It is a broadened version of it.

This is peat with history behind it.

Who Is This For?

Peat drinkers who want depth beyond the standard 10-year profile. Those who enjoy medicinal Islay character but appreciate added sweetness, oak complexity, and textural weight.

Overall Character

Deeply smoky, maritime malt with layered oak influence. Medicinal peat supported by dark fruit, spice, and richer sweetness than the core range.

Production Style

Laphroaig uses heavily peated malted barley and traditional copper pot stills. Lore is matured in a mix of ex-bourbon barrels, smaller quarter casks that intensify wood interaction, and European oak casks adding structure and spice. Bottled at 48% ABV, it retains texture and avoids dilution.

Nose

Classic iodine and seaweed lead, but softened by vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit. Bonfire smoke intertwines with toasted oak and orange peel. There’s a subtle earthy depth, almost damp wood and cocoa. The alcohol carries aroma confidently without sharpness.

Palate

Medium to full body. Oily texture with strong mouth-coating presence. Peat smoke is immediate, tar, ash, and brine, followed by dark chocolate, raisins, and sweet malt. Oak spice builds gradually, adding cinnamon and clove from the European casks. The 48% ABV is well integrated, providing grip and warmth without harsh heat. The structure feels layered rather than linear.

Finish

Long and warming. Smoke lingers alongside drying oak and faint dark fruit sweetness. A peppery edge persists before settling into sweet ash and cocoa bitterness. It sustains intensity without collapsing.

Strengths

Greater depth than the standard 10-year expression.

Excellent texture at 48% ABV.

Balanced integration of multiple cask influences.

Limitations

Oak spice can edge toward dryness late in the palate.

Complexity is layered but not dramatically evolving.

It promises depth, and mostly delivers, though it never entirely escapes its peat-forward identity.

Value & Use Case

A compelling upgrade for those who enjoy Laphroaig 10 but want added richness and texture. Suitable for focused sipping rather than casual pouring. A strong option for experienced peat drinkers seeking complexity without extreme cask strength power.

Similar Whiskies

Lagavulin 16 – Similar mature peat depth. Advantage: Greater age-derived refinement. Disadvantage: Lower ABV and less intensity.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan – Similar bold peat presence. Advantage: Higher intensity and spice. Disadvantage: Less rounded sweetness.

Port Charlotte 10 – Similar balance of smoke and sweetness. Advantage: Cleaner fruit clarity. Disadvantage: Less medicinal character.

Final Verdict

Laphroaig Lore builds on the distillery’s medicinal foundation with added oak richness and impressive texture. It retains coastal intensity while offering broader depth and structure. Not the most explosive peat release, but a composed and satisfying one.

Smoke with substance.
