Scandinavia

Coastal Power, Controlled

Myken Autumn Gale is a limited Norwegian single malt that leans into weight and cask presence without losing composure. It comes from a young Arctic distillery that has chosen intensity over comfort, and in this release that decision largely pays off. The whisky feels deliberate, structured, and unapologetically modern.

Who Is This For?

For drinkers who appreciate bold cask influence and maritime character. It suits those comfortable with higher-strength whisky and those curious about serious Scandinavian single malt.

Overall Character

Full-bodied and assertive. Dark fruit, salted caramel, and firm oak sit alongside subtle coastal salinity. It is compact and energetic rather than expansive.

Production Style

Made from lightly peated malt (12.6 PPM). Distilled using desalinated seawater in copper pot stills heated over live flame. Matured primarily in ex-sherry casks and rounded off with a small portion of ex-bourbon casks before bottling at 51% ABV. Non-chill filtered. Natural colour.

Nose

Dried figs, dates, and dark raisins lead. Cocoa powder, toasted nuts, and a faint saline edge keep the sweetness controlled. A gentle thread of smoke weaves through the fruit rather than dominating. The higher strength lifts the aromas without overwhelming them.

Palate

Rich arrival. Sherried fruitcake, burnt sugar, orange peel, and espresso. Mid-palate brings clove and cracked black pepper. The peat influence is subtle but present, adding structure rather than weight. The texture is oily and confident, though the oak tightens toward the back.

Finish

Medium to long. Dark chocolate, salted toffee, drying spice, and a faint smoky echo persist. A mineral edge lingers at the end, clean and slightly austere.

Strengths

Dense, well-defined sherry profile

Good texture and weight at 51%

Clear sense of identity

Limitations

The oak edges slightly toward dominance in the final third, narrowing the finish.

Value & Use Case

Best enjoyed neat with time in the glass. It rewards patience and suits cooler evenings. This is not a casual pour; it asks for attention and largely delivers.

Final Verdict

Autumn Gale demonstrates that youth is not a weakness when cask management is thoughtful. At 3 years and 10 months, it carries more structure than its age suggests. It is concentrated and slightly uncompromising. One sharp observation: this is a whisky that would rather impress you than charm you. Fortunately, it mostly succeeds at both.
